James W Thomas, son of Jacob Thomas and Mary Callahan Thomas
James W Thomas was born 1832 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. He was murdered in the Centralia (Missouri) Massacre about 11AM on September 27, 1864 when guerrillas under command of Col William (Bloody Bill) Anderson stopped the train from Mexico, MO toward St Joseph, MO, pulled 21 unarmed Union troops of the 1st Missouri Engineers from the train, stripped, robbed, then shot 20 of them, including James, alongside the railroad tracks. James held the rank of Artificier (Specialist) in the 1st Missouri Engineers. He was on furlough, returning to Rushville, MO to visit his wife Dicy and three daughters, Lucinda Jane, Mary Ellen and Susan Alice. He married Dicey Hurst on December 18, 1856 in Buchanan County, Missouri. She was born 1835 and died 1908 in Rushville, Buchanan County, Missouri.
